Last Day of Kindergarten

Yesterday was Ethan’s last day of kindergarten. I can’t believe the year has gone by so quickly! He did really well, and has been excited about having “vacation weeks” for the rest of the summer. He’s a bit confused about how long 10 weeks is (“Do I have to go to school on Wednesday?), but is thrilled at the prospect. Ethan just loves to play with new toys, play with friends, and play all day. This summer he’ll be going to a few different places, ranging from the pre-school where he went last year, to the town’s recreation department camp. I’m taking a couple of weeks off to take him out to visit my sister and his cousins in July.

The last two months seem like a blur. We had Ethan’s birthday party in late April, which was at our house. Despite requests for nice weather, it was drizzly that day, so we had 11 screaming kids inside the house. Our friend Tom was a huge help, with more innovative ways to play Simon Says than I knew existed, and making taking turns in the bouncy a game. He even managed to get a few great photos too (not sure when…)

Ethan got his first pets a couple of weeks ago. He got three platys fish from school which he named Orangy, Greeny, and Greeny. Mom pretty much feeds them and changes their water, but they’re officially his. (They make me very grateful we don’t have anything more complicated!)

Last week we went to four birthday parties. This was more than his class had the entire rest of the year. Meeting parents at the parties, and teachers and others at the end of the school year, made clear just how much Ethan touches other people’s lives. When we bumped into the mother of his fifth grade buddy, N., she gushed over Ethan – how much her daughter had loved working with him. The other parents, as they often do, commented how much their kid talked about Ethan. A neighbor told me how much the boys were competing to hold Ethan’s hand on the class trip. And then there are the numerous marriage proposals from the girls. (I was never so popular – it feels so unfamiliar to me)
