Dentist, Gym, and Bus

This week Ethan went to the dentist for a checkup. The dentist let him play with all the buttons, which Ethan enthusiastically did, much to the possible regret of said dentist when he realized the extent and persistence of Ethan’s curiosity (What does this do? What is this for? Why are you doing that? What’s this? Can I see? Can I try?) all why Ethan was pushing on the water spout, and generally putting his hands on any available button, surface, instrument, or water source within his reach.

On Wednesday I volunteered at his school’s gym class. (It’s actually somewhat competitive to volunteer – last month I responded to an email 20 minutes after it was sent out, and didn’t get a spot. Who would guess?) Anyway, there were giant ropes to swing and climb on, a balance beam, and little roller things the kids drove by twisting them back and forth with their arms. The kids were very sweet, but the teacher was fairly unpleasant, chastising them every few minutes. How can you make gym class so unpleasant? Luckily she is only a temp.

A couple of days ago Ethan wanted to take the bus, which he usually prefers not to. At some point he admitted it was because a girl in his class was going to be on it. How cute! I got to meet her at the gym class, and she and Ethan seemed so genuinely affectionate with each other. It’s not clear to me it’s as much of a boy/girl thing, as just two kids who like each other.
